Rugged Notebooks Contradistinguished from The Giants

Rugged Social Network for the Rugged Notebook Industry / as reprinted from Social Marketing Magazine by Social Computing News Desk

How does a small niche company in the computer industry contradistinguish itself from the giants? What better way than by starting a Web 2.0 forum in the form of “The Rugged Notebooks Forum” and network – a natural extension of the “The Rugged Notebooks Blog”, an industry first introduced earlier this year.

“The company blog and new forum are influenced by the Web 2.0 concept of social networks specific to user group interaction,” notes Alan Shad, President of Rugged Notebooks, Inc., the company known for “Extreme Computers for Extreme Conditions”.

The online forum using Ning is devoted to the Rugged Notebook niche and can be joined by anyone interested in a forum discussion regarding many of the issues and topics related to industry news, announcements, equipment, hardware and software, employment opportunities, or other relevant topics posted by forum members. Membership is free and it’s easy to join.

“This forum and online network offers the opportunity to share and discuss ideas in a manner not possible by simply making comments to blogs,” Shad notes.

You can review and join the forum at www.ruggednotebooksforum.ning.com, he adds.

REAL TOUGHBOOK STORIES: FOURTH IN A SERIES ON RUGGED MOBILE TECHNOLOGY / TRANSFLECTIVE VS. TRANSMISSIVE DISPLAY SCREENS

This is the last post of the four part series demonstrating unique design and engineering features separating the Rugged Notebooks Rough Rider Series from the Panasonic Toughbook Rugged Series (review 1st in Series and 2nd in Series, 3rd in Series).

One of the more important usability features of rugged notebooks, notwithstanding the ability to operate in harsh conditions, is the need for a Sunlight Readable Screen. In the case of Rugged Notebooks, Inc., this LCD technology and construction is termed “Transflective”, versus the “Transmissive” LCD technology used in the Toughbook Rugged Series. The major design goals are to reduce glare, harness the use of reflective ambient light, and conserve battery usage in a mobile device. The diagrams below illustrate the differences in design and construction.

Technology Briefs / Transflective Sunlight Readable Screens

Transflective Sunlight Readable technology can increase the LCD backlight module light efficiency without increasing its lamp power consumption. Normally, light transmission is lost in standard LCDs as shown in Figure 1 Conversely, Figure 2 illustrates how Sunlight Readable LCD technology allows for more light transmission.

Additionally, Transflective Sunlight Readable technology reduces glare from reflected light. Normally, LCDs with normal touch screen or with some protection, are clear in opacity, resulting in glare from strong light sources. Sunlight Readable technology provides a complete and total solution by extending the benefits of Sunlight Readable technology to touch screen and protection glass.

Transflective Sunlight Readable Screen Technology is available not only in the Rough Rider Series, but also most other models in the Rugged Notebooks product line. Contact a sales representative for additional information or questions.

In conclusion, Rough Rider Notebooks have at least four features that make them truly the “toughest” notebooks. As has been reviewed in this series of True Toughbook Stories, these features are: Fanless Superconductor Heat Pipes, EMI-RFI Cable Shielding, Superior O-Ring Construction, and the Transflective LCD Design.

Is This The First Rugged UMPC of The Future?
July 13, 2007, 6:19 pm

Since the inception of The Rugged Notebooks Blog and Network, a couple of posts have touched on the subject of rugged UMPCs, why it seems there are no truly rugged UPMC choices (MIL-STD), and when such smaller rugged devices may eventually arrive in the market.

We Just May Be Getting A Little Closer

Asutek Computers, Inc. (Asus) has a 7 inch rugged UMPC called the Hermes ready for launch.

This from a review at:
Gotta Be Mobile Dot Com
.

“It uses a C7-M processor chip from Via Technologies, is fan-less, meets the MIL-STD-810F shock-resistance standard, and is water proof. The screen can either be backlight from a fluorescent tube or LED. The model displayed a CompuTex had a harddrive, but according to Tech-On, Asus plans on offering an SSD version, too.”

This entry into the “Rugged UMPC Market” is scheduled to launch this Fall. Initial pricing for the standard version is believed to be near the $700 mark. Not bad, since the pricing for the elusive (and non-ruggedized) Vistagami UMPC has always been targeted at just under the $1,000 threshold.

FTC SAYS NO TO NET NEUTRALTIY
July 7, 2007, 11:29 pm

The End of The Internet As We know It?

Save the Net Now

This is bad news for all of us…not just those in rugged wireless and mobile.

“The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has decided to abandon net neutrality and allow telecoms companies to charge websites for access.

The FTC said in a report that, despite popular support for net neutrality, it was minded to let the market sort out the issue.

This means that the organization will not stand in the way of companies using differential pricing to make sure that some websites can be viewed more quickly than others. The report also counsels against net neutrality legislation.”
